headforthehills

Sagada, several hours North of Banaue, remote mountian region of the island of Luzon.

Though a connection of a connection I was able to hook up with a bunch of american travelers who where going up north to Sagada. We left at 8:30pm. it was suppose to be an 11hour trip from Manila to Bontoc. Nearly 15 hours of sicknness, and one break down/bus switch later we pulled in, ate lunch and got on a jeep that would take us the remaining distance to Sagada.

There is always enough room for one more on these jeeps, even when you end up riding on the roof. I didn't mind. The scenery was way better up top.

After a night of no sleep, and two days of me not eating from being sick we go caving. Hours of climbing in the cold underground, swimming in freezing sub-terranian pools, and trying to keep out of the bat crap left me feeling pretty wasted. I threw up the little that was left in me went back to the hostle and slept for 13hours.

Feeling better. Went hiking to see the hanging coffins of Sagada. Apparently when someone dies up here, they hang the bodies in coffins suspended from the cliffs. Most of these are hundreds of years old. However, some of them are as recent as last month.

Grave robbers and the passing of time mean that some of these coffins fall to the ground leaving the remains smashed on the rock.
The landscape in the north is incredible. The terraces here where not as huge at banaue, but they were in their final stage, and looked really nice.
